Dr. Bronner, Don’t Lose Your Mojo

imageDr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps are wonderful. They have a wacky brand with entertainingly bizarre messages written all over the packaging (click for a closeup). And it’s great soap.

They have die-hard fans who have been with them for decades.  And they just happen to be a green and organic company, long before it was a fad.

imageThat’s why I was horrified to see this new bottle. It could be from anyone. It could be a generic drug-store brand.

Warning to the Bronner family: If you lose your personality, you lose the company.  You’re about to throw away an irreplaceable 60-year-old brand, just when your niche is going mainstream, big-time.

    I’d like to know who came up with this awful idea… put into execution. I would hate to see the meetings that led up to this, but they’d at least be a valuable (if bitter) pill to swallow.

    I have to defend Dr. Bronner here. Keep in mind that this is a new product — they’re not replacing the old label with this one. Their signature castile soaps remain — and I’m sure will remain forever — in the same cool inscrutable packaging.
    The company has branched out into making lots of other products since their founder died — lotion, lip moisturizer, energy bars, etc. — and I don’t begrudge them the right to branch out in their packaging design as well. (Although I agree they should keep the classic label on their classic soaps, and they are!)
    Also, far from losing their mojo, they’ve got better mojo than ever. The documentary will give you all the details, but they’re the most ethical company I’ve ever encountered.
    By the way, I have that shikakai soap (which can be used as shampoo), and it’s excellent — completely nontoxic, yet it suds right up. A rare thing.
