Help them make the business case

Here’s a great idea from the folks at Jive Software. They want people to come to their annual conference — so they help them get approval from their boss. Below is the text of a word document that you can download from the conference site to help you make the case to your boss why you should attend. Note how it’s very straightforward with no salesy copy or inflation of the value — it’s a good start for a credible internal memo.

I’m writing to ask for approval to attend Jive Software’s annual user conference (JiveWorld12) this October 9-11 in Las Vegas.

JiveWorld is 2 full days of Social Business best practices from a diverse base of Jive customers. There’ll be tons of case studies, hands-on training, and even customers giving demos of their own Jive implementations.

This one conference convenes an entire community of Social Business experts. At a total cost of about $2,098, it’s the most cost-effective way to ensure that we’re getting the most from our Social Business Software.

In particular, I’d like to focus on finding solutions or best practices that could benefit these projects:

Here’s an approximate breakdown of conference costs:

This conference should deliver incredible value. Besides learning about the latest features and I’ll also get a preview of future features.

I’ll also develop better contacts with industry experts and gain knowledge in specific areas of the Jive platform. These “wins” will pay off in the form of streamlined practices, tested solutions, and a network of Social Business Software peers to network with for advice and support.

I’ll submit a post-conference report that will include an executive summary, major take-aways, tips, and a set of recommendations to maximize our current investments in Jive.
