Lessons of the free umbrella

photo (27)There’s an employee standing in a torrential downpour outside the Publix grocery store in Ft. Myers, FL.

She’s loaning people umbrellas so they can get to their car. Then folks drive around and return it.

That simple courtesy changes the story of the shopping experience, from a crappy rainstorm disaster to a surprisingly pleasant moment with a caring merchant.

Be the caring one.

    Love the story!
It proves that the simplest thing works. I’m sure people who went there and had this great exp will be back. Sunny or raining =D

One of my first jobs I was a doorman or host at a small restaurant. This was one of the things we did for people. We kept a handful of umbrellas at the door and if it started raining while you were having dinner, we’d walk you out under the umbrella and keep you dry.

It’s a little thing but I’m sure it felt like a big thing.
