Social media to seniors

From an email I received this week…

Hi Andy

Really enjoy your blog.

I really feel that social networking to my demographic (older people) is a bit of a waste of time. Do you have any reference etc to prove or disprove the benefits of social networking to older people? Its my impression that most don’t use twitter, blogging etc.

Hi Ian –

1. You don’t have to do it. No one is making you.

2. Word of mouth marketing, my specialty, is much more than social media. Earning WOM is more that just moving your ads to Facebook.

3. Half of boomers and 1/3 of seniors have a social media presence, and it’s growing. Data here and here.

4. For those that do, it’s still the cheapest, easiest, and most effective marketing there is.

Seniors seem to use Facebook a ton to keep in touch with family members. Perhaps they aren’t huge Twitter users.

Andy, I agree with your point; however, I don’t think your numbers say quite what you state they do…according to the chart about half of boomers and 1/3 of seniors who use the internet have a social media presence. I’m sure there’s also a good chunk (of seniors especially) that don’t use the internet, which could bring the overall % down quite a bit.
