Spreading the word, one person at a time

image The best word of mouth comes from really simple gestures.

Example: I sometimes send a free copy of my book to people who blog about me.  Sometimes it pays off big.

  1. Novelist, author, and teacher Brandilyn Collins blogged about my book here.
  2. I sent her a note and three copies of the book.
  3. She wrote three more blog posts here and here
  4. She held a contest to give away my book to her readers.
  5. The winners are announced.

Brandilyn and her readers got great content, I got great promotion.  A really easy win-win for all.

It is more than a win win situation. It is a triple win situation. You forgot the winners of your book.

Seth Godin did something similar for the launch of The Dip. He spoke on a Tuesday morning in NYC for a limited audience at the low low attendance price of $50. All attendees were given 5 copies of the book. Everyone I spoke to shared the book with co-workers or friends in the business.
He believed that his product was worth sharing. He believed that the act of reading one of his books was enough to generate new advocacy. He empowered his advocates with new ways to advocate. And it worked.
