#2.03: The Start A Movement Issue

1 > Use your Web site to empower the public
2 > Make the most of customer feedback
3 > Start a virus that’ll get you information

1 > Use your Web site to empower the public

Drive traffic and legislation your way by empowering consumers to communicate with their elected officials through your Web site. Capitol Advantage’s Cap Wiz is an online grassroots legislative action tool that integrates into your site. Once installed, Cap Wiz lets your visitors find and contact relevant representatives, voicing opinions about issues pertinent to your industry. Users can search for representatives’ contact information and voting history, and send letters, faxes, or emails to these officials. All correspondence is sent on behalf of your company as either a pre composed or self-created message, depending on the options you set up. You may also set up Action Alerts that keep your audience informed of the issues, driving them your way when politics heat up. For only $2,500 per year, you can install this tool, helping visitors express their opinions, turning your site into a grassroots forum.

The lesson: Harness the public’s political awareness and its need to feel in control, as well as the power of the Internet to get your customers all fired up — and visiting your site!

2 > Make the most of customer feedback

Your customers are the key to your business, so stay in-the-know on what they’re saying about you. Feedback anagement solutions provider Planet Feedback invites companies to subscribe to its service in order to receive feedback from customers. Consumers visit Planet Feedback to comment, question, or complain about a company, entering the details into pre-formatted letters. Planet Feedback then delivers the message to the relevant company on the consumer’s behalf. Customers also have the options to post their letters to the site for public viewing, and to read customer reviews posted by other consumers. This means that your customer reviews are available to other prospective buyers. Responsiveness to customer feedback can make or break your brand. Unsolicited positive reviews and smoothly handled poor customer experiences can be fantastic sources of free advertising that can really make a splash. Keep up on what your customers are saying — capitalize on the good and fix the bad before it gets ugly.

The lesson: An opinionated customer can be your greatest source of publicity or your worst nightmare. A strong reputation for customer service can be a tremendous supplement to your paid marketing initiatives.

3 > Start a virus that’ll get you information

Here’s a case of viral marketing at its finest. CelebrateSomebody has developed a tool that lets you invite tens or thousands of people to visit a Web site and contribute their thoughts on a particular topic. You can then compile everyone’s input into one final book that you can customize and print for only $18.95. In a recently launched campaign to drive some traffic its way, CelebrateSomebody designed a book to honor Rudy Giuliani as he leaves his post as NYC’s mayor. Enthusiasts of the former mayor were invited to visit the site, submit their farewells, and invite  their friends to do the same. Friends invited friends to visit the site, and a virus was born.

The lesson: Use the Web’s most basic tools — a Web site, some forms, and a database — to create a powerful online marketing operation.
