Aha! #1: Great Ideas from Nick Ayres of The Home Depot

We hosted a cool event last October called BlogWell: How Big Businesses Use Social Media. Some amazingly great ideas  were shared by some very large companies, and I wanted to share them with you.

We're doing it again on January 22 in Chicago. Hear social media case studies from Allstate, H&R Block, The Home Depot, Mayo Clinic, Procter & Gamble, Walmart, Sharpie and the U.S. Coast Guard. Learn more.

Nick's big idea: Use social media to put a human face on your brand and act as a member of your community.

When the hurricanes struck the south last year, Nick Ayres and The Home Depot acted quickly to help. Nick realized that even as many customers were left without power or nowhere near their home computer, they still had access to their cell phones.  Many of these phones are Web-enabled, so he used @The HomeDepot Twitter account to send people information about open stores and product availability (plywood and sump pumps are in heavy demand during a hurricane).  According to Nick, the feedback and commentary (both from inside and outside the company) was extraordinarily positive.  While it may have jumpstarted short-term sales, Nick insists "that wasn't the point."
