Domain crazy

I’m looking for a domain for a new project (company?) that I’m starting. I emailed 3 people who had pretty good domains that they aren’t using, offering to buy the domains. Each of them asked me for $2 million +.

That’s just stupid.

To those of you who think you’re cashing in on a hot domain… wake up!

  1. Companies that are dumb enough to waste that kind of cash on a domain are long gone.
  2. They are never coming back.
  3. This is why new startups are making up names like "Rollyo" and "Google"
  4. You just left a five-figure check on the table with your silly fantasy of a seven-figure check.

To companies who think they need a great domain to be successful… wake up!

  1. $2 million in marketing will make you more successful than a $2 million domain name
  2. $2 million in product design improvements will make you more successful than a $2 million domain name
  3. $2 million in customer service will make you more successful than a $2 million domain name

All you need is a word-of-mouth worthy domain.  It should be short, memorable, repeatable, and spelled like it sounds.

It’s not the name, it’s what you do with it.  If domains mattered, we’d be using books.com and search.com — not amazon.com and google.com
