Let your customers in on the planning #2

[Note: When I write about a politician, I’m not talking about politics. I’m writing about marketing lessons.]

Here’s another great example from the Obama team that shows how to get deep buy in: They sent out a mass email asking for hiring recommendations.

Everyone who got this email instantly felt important. It made you feel like an insider, like part of the management team. It also let you have a little fantasy about what it would be like to go on the road with an exciting political campaign.

How can you make your customers feel like important insiders?

Hi,
2012You’re one of very few people receiving this email because, based on what you’ve told the Obama organization in the past, we think you might know someone who should quit his or her job and come work on the Obama campaign’s digital team for the next 18 months.

That person might be a colleague, a friend, a client — or even you.

We need your help recruiting the folks that will wage the most innovative and effective digital campaign in history, a team that will not just surpass but demolish our fundraising, communications, and organizing goals.

That kind of work takes a lot of people — and not just people with political experience. If we’re going to transform the way campaigns are run and use every possible channel to help elect President Obama to a new term, we need fresh ideas and new talent from creative agencies, non-profits, media companies, tech startups, and anywhere else that employs people with drive, skill, and a desire to serve.

So here’s the deal: We need people from around the country to join us full-time in our headquarters in Chicago, starting ASAP and committing through November 2012 for this once-in-a-lifetime chance to use their skills to make a real difference.

It won’t pay very well. The hours are terrible. But it will be the most extraordinary, exhausting and fulfilling professional experience you or someone you know will ever have.

We’re hiring people at all levels, from team directors to junior staff. We’re especially looking for folks with skills and experience in the following areas …

If any of that sounds like something you or someone you know would like to be a part of, the application process starts here: http://my.barackobama.com/Work-For-Us

By now you are probably thinking of someone in particular who’d be a great fit — forward this email to him or her now. If you’re thinking you might know lots of people who’d be great, here are some links to make it super simple to share this with your networks on Facebook and Twitter:
