Message from Captain Obvious: Don’t sue your fans

Again and again we hear of hot-in-the-trousers trademark lawyers harassing a company’s biggest fans. We’re not talking about trademark thieves trying to rip off your work. We’re talking about people who love you so much that they dedicate their free time to promoting you.

The latest: Costume company Volpin Props got a cease and desist for paying tribute to the work of a carpet company. The nearly 3,000 likes and comments are good for the company.

Recommendation: Sit your brand/marketing team down with your legal team and find a way to support and encourage fan sharing, while still protecting your trademarks.
