Executives and entrepreneurs think that their customers are just like them. So they design a product based on what they like.
Which is obviously wrong, when you think about it — we’re the opposite of normal people. Most people don’t do what we do or like what we like. (And it’s worse if you live in an extremely unusual market like Manhattan or the Silicon Valley.)
Some good evidence that you don’t know your customers as well as you think you do:
- 1/3 of paperbacks and ebooks sold are romances
- Movies get 4 stars from viewers, and 1 star from professional reviewers
- Jersey Shore
