2> Amazon Honor System: An Easier Way To Get Paid
3> VolunteerMatch: Online Recruiting For Doing Good

1> Fred’s Team: Helping Volunteers Help You

Marathon runners join Fred’s Team to help raise money for Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Runners go to the web site to create their own private fundraising page, with their own photos and requests for donations. They can use the site to email their friends, with links back to the runner’s page. All donations get credited right to the runner’s personal score card. Look at the impact of a relatively simple web site: Runners are motivated to raise money, they get recognition for their efforts, they have viral marketing tools to spread the word, and everything is painless and easy. A good little web site turns a single volunteer into an online marketing machine.

THE LESSON: Make it easy for your supporters (or customers) to support you. Give them the tools to do it right.

2> Amazon Honor System: An Easier Way To Get Paid

You’ve given Amazon plenty of money over the past few years. Now why don’t you let them give you some money? The Amazon Honor System lets charities and small web sites use Amazon’s billing technology to collect donations. They give you the code and technology, and you pay only a token processing fee. Plus, you get access to their millions of customers who already have accounts. It’s great for small web sites, who get an easy way to collect some cash. And it’s great for Amazon, which gets the benefit of being associated with the good causes that use the system.

THE LESSON: Online commerce doesn’t need to be complicated. Find a friend to do the hard part.

3> VolunteerMatch: Online Recruiting For Doing Good

Want to volunteer, but don’t know where? Need well-intentioned helpers, but don’t know where to find them? VolunteerMatch is the donate-your-time equivalent of Monster or other job sites. More than 25,000 organizations post opportunities that individuals can volunteer for — automating an activity that has often been hit-or-miss. We really like the fact that the organization is supported by licensing its technology to corporations who want to set up volunteer centers on their intranet.

THE LESSON: The internet is all about communities — and creating tools to connect them. Use the tools that help you help your own community.

4> Check It Out: Get Paid For Doing Nothing

Karyn Bosnak wanted other people to pay her credit cards. So she put up a web site and asked for gifts. She got $25,000.
