Hand-to-hand word of mouth

Terra toysWho knows how long this quarter has been passed around Austin, featuring our favorite local toy store. It may not be legal to sticker your change, but local fans have kept it moving around.

The Lessons:

  1. Word of mouth marketing doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive.
  2. Viral isn’t just an online thing.

How can you help folks share your story — offline?

I noticed you said “offline” which always gets me thinking how every business uses the web now and since its a much faster channel, I’d not be looking to restrict a promotion

My fave, before the net, story is putting a coupon and contest entry form on the back of a bumper sticker. We got people to use the sticker because the winner was chosen by license plate numbers we observed.

One caveat.. If you do this, don’t hold a comedy show and pass out the stickers on the way into the show. Turns out people drinking and watching comedy are very happy to rip the form off the sticker when you tell them about the contest. AND in a mood to be creative with the stickers
